Household Treadle Sewing Machine Threading Instructions

Old sewing machines work much like modern ones.

Sewing machines haven't changed much over the decades. Most of them have a similar layout so that you can go from one to another without having to make many adjustments. In fact, some people prefer to use old metal sewing machines over the newer plastic ones because they find them more durable. Therefore if you learn thread one kind of sewing machine, you will also be able to work with many others with minimal differences.

Instructions

1. Place the spool of thread on the long metal strut sticking out of the top of your sewing machine. The spool should stand up straight when you do this.

2. Place an empty bobbin on the smaller strut by the spool. The long and small struts are right next to each other on most sewing machines.

3. Take hold of the end of the thread from the spool and draw it across the length of the sewing machine to the small protrusion on the other end. Loop it around this protrusion through the narrow slits in it and pull the thread over to the bobbin.

4. Wind the thread 10 times around the bobbin. Tug the bobbin toward the end of your machine until you hear a click and the bobbin slides about 1 inch.

5. Step on the treadle. The treadle is the foot peddle that comes with home sewing machines. Pressing on the treadle will cause the spool and bobbin to begin to spin. The bobbin will fill with thread.

6. Push the bobbin back into its original position when it is full of thread. Snip the bobbin free from the spool and remove it.

7. Remove your bobbin and place it in the round bobbin holder. Pass the thread from it along the bobbin holder's groove and pull gently. The bobbin inside should rotate clockwise.

8. Thread the end of the string through the tiny loop on your bobbin holder. Insert the bobbin holder into the space meant for it just under the machine's needle.

9. Take the loose end of thread from your spool and loop it over the same protrusion at the end of your sewing machine.

10. Pass the thread down the slit on the side of the sewing machine that is immediately adjacent to the protrusion.

11. Follow the groove and loop the thread around and back up the slit parallel to the first one.

12. Pull the thread through the slit in the arm at the top of the groove. Loop it back around toward you so that the thread hangs down from the arm.

13. Pull the thread down toward the machine's needle and pass it through the series of hooks on the side of the machine.

14. Pass the thread through the last hook by the needle and thread the end through the needle.

15. Rotate the hand wheel on the end of your sewing machine to manually move the needle up and down until it snags the thread from the bobbin below.
