If you bought a garage door opener from Sears, chances are it's a Craftsman, their inhouse brand of tools and machinery. Craftsman openers are fairly easy to adjust using settings on the back of the unit. Sometimes, however, adjusting the garage door opener requires that you first adjust the garage door. Instructions
1. Inspect the bolts that connect the garage door panels with your fingers. You'll want to do this with the garage door closed. If you feel loose bolts, use a socket and socket wrench to tighten them down. Inspect all the panels on the inside.
2. Inspect the rollers and the track. The roller can get bogged down with grease and gunk. Spray them with some WD-40 to ensure a smooth roll. You'll also want to visually inspect the track to make sure that there's nothing impeding the rollers.
3. Adjust the up and down controls on the opener housing with your screwdriver. You'll see two separate adjustable knobs on the back of the garage door opener. The one on the left will control how far up and down the door goes. Turn it a quarter of a turn either clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust for door height. If the door doesn't go all the way down, you need to turn the up/down knob counterclockwise. If it doesn't go all the way up, you need to turn it clockwise.
4. Adjust the tension control knob. This one is right next to the up and down control knob. You'll have to use your screwdriver and turn the knob only a quarter of a turn to either increase or decrease the tension. If the door closes and then goes back up without pressing the button, your tension is too high and can be decreased by turning the knob counterclockwise. If your door doesn't go up at all, your tension is too low and can be increased by turning the knob clockwise.
5. Open the garage door with the wall-mounted opener or with your remote. Push the button several times to allow the door to open and close. This is the best way to check if it needs more adjustment. Depending on how the door reacts, you'll know which adjustment knob you need to turn. Continue adjusting and opening and closing the garage door until it works properly.
