Repair Rust In The Wheel Well Of An Automobile

Rust in the wheel well of an automobile can spread rapidly because of the damp conditions that the wheel well is often going through. Mud, water and rocks are constantly thrown into the wheel wells. Rocks chip the metal of the wheel well, while mud sticks to the metal, creating a perfect place for rust to appear. Eventually rust deteriorates the metal and causes holes. Learn repair rust in the wheel well of an automobile and keep your car in one piece.

Instructions

1. Raise the car up and place jack stands under each side. Remove the tire/wheel from the wheel well that you will be working on.

2. Using a screw driver, push it into and around the most obviously rusted area in the wheel well. If the area is very soft, the screw driver will shove through, making a hole. If the rust is just on the surface, you won't be able to shove the screw driver into the metal.

3. Use a grinder to grind away all of the visible rust. Once the surface rust is grinded away, you can see if the rust continues under the surface. Grind until all of the rust is gone.

4. Brush out any remaining rust with a wire brush. Be sure to brush vigorously to remove all flakes of rust. If there are now holes in the wheel well where the rust was removed, place a piece of sheet metal (cut to the size of the hole) as a patch and weld it into place. Grind the edges of the weld down if desired.

5. Spray Dupli color undercoating on the entire wheel well. Coat all exposed metal of the wheel well, including the rusted areas you repaired or welded. This protects the metal from future chips and keeps mud and water from reaching the metal.
