Low income residents of New Mexico may benefit from a number of programs that offset the cost of energy efficient window and door replacements. These programs, which are distributed through organizations throughout the Land of Enchantment, as New Mexico is known, offer grants to qualified homeowners for the purpose of improving energy efficiency, which often leads to lower utility bills. Housing New Mexico
The New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority issues grant funding to qualified, low income residents of New Mexico to help offset the cost of home energy improvements. These grants, distributed through the Housing New Mexico Energy Smart Program, are used to replace older, less efficient windows and doors with new, energy improved models and can also be used for other energy improvements such as roof repairs and insulation installation. While preference is given to applicants age 60 or over, families with children, the disabled, and any homeowner in the state with an income that does not exceed 200 percent of the designated federal poverty level may qualify. Applicants must apply for funding directly through the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority for approval.

NM HUD Grants
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issues grants to qualified homeowners for home improvements and repairs. These grants, distributed through individual state level offices, are provided to low income homeowners who want to improve the safety and energy efficiency of their homes, which will ultimately lead to lower utility costs. Approved repairs include the replacement of old windows and doors to improve insulation, repair of roofing and floors, and the replacement of plumbing and heating or air conditioning units. To qualify for HUD grants through New Mexico's state office, applicants must meet income qualifications, and funds must be used towards the repair of their primary residence. Applicants must apply directly through their local HUD office for approval.

New Mexico LIHEAP
The New Mexico Department of Human Services Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides assistance to low income homeowners. Through individual grant funds, LIHEAP helps homeowners with the cost of heating and cooling, and with home repairs designed to improve home energy efficiency. Improvements include the replacement of old, drafty doors and windows with new, more energy efficient models. To receive grant funding for home repairs, applicants must be residents New Mexico and the home must be their primary residence. Applicants must also meet income guidelines and apply directly through their local LIHEAP office.
