Repair Cracks In A Log Cabin

Age may cause wood to crack or split.

A rustic log cabin with its thick wood walls typically last for years. Throughout its life, weather and other unforeseen elements may cause cracking or splitting of the logs. Repairing these cracks with the right materials as soon as possible will prevent extensive damage from occurring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Dry the cracked or split area in the wood. Stuff a cotton rag into the area and allow any excess water to soak up. Apply a natural heat source, such as a blow dryer, to the area to finish the drying process.

2. Push a backer rod into the crack. Insert into the opening at least, but no more, than 2 1/2-inches.

3. Place the cement chink tube into a caulking gun and cut off the tip. Squeeze the chink into the crack, filling the area completely.

4. Smooth the outside of the filled area with a trowel. This will flatten the chink even to the wall. Wipe away excess product. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.

5. Apply a coat of wood sealant over the filled crack. Use a roller to spread an even layer of sealant and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
