Colleges In Huntsville Texas

Two major colleges offer degrees in Huntsville, Texas.

The city of Huntsville, Texas, located in the eastern portion of the state and between Dallas and Houston, boasts a population of approximately 35,000 and connections to history's colorful Sam Houston. Huntsville is also home to two higher education centers: a branch of Lee College (lee.edu) and Sam Houston State University (shsu.edu). These two institutions offer very different experiences for students.

Associate Degrees

The Lee College satellite awards two-year degrees such as Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science. The associate's degrees include general education classes such as composition, natural sciences, math, humanities and social studies courses. Available associate's degree majors at Lee's Huntsville campus include HVAC, auto body repair, auto mechanics, diesel mechanics, business administration, computer information systems, electronic telecommunications, horticulture, humanities and welding. Students may transfer Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees to a four-year college or university.

Certificates

Lee College offers certificates of completion in a number of vocational programs, as well, such as HVAC training, auto body repair, auto mechanics, computer microprocessing, dental laboratory technology, diesel mechanics, electronics & communications, horticulture, truck and heavy machinery operations, welding and machine shop.

Certification programs through Sam Houston State University prepare college graduates for teaching instead. States require teachers, principals and counselors in public schools to hold teaching licenses, and this coursework fulfills partial requirements for that credential.

Bachelor Degrees

Four-year bachelor degrees offered by Sam Houston State University include those from the colleges of arts and sciences, business, criminal justice, humanities and social sciences, education and medical and allied health. Students can major in programs such as accounting, art, biology, business administration, history, marketing, philosophy, music and psychology as well as more unique majors such as bilingual health care studies, forensic chemistry, industrial technology, international business, musical theater and victim studies. Prior to selecting a major, students work within a general studies program at Sam Houston State University to help them find a specific direction of interest.

Advanced Degrees

Sam Houston State University also confers advanced degrees at the master's and doctoral levels. Master's programs include general arts and sciences such as statistics, dance, chemistry, agriculture and information security; business issues such as finance, accounting and business administration; criminal justice and forensics; education areas such as counseling, administration, kinesiology, library science and special education; and humanities and social sciences including English, psychology and Spanish.
