Grants Or Credits In Florida For Wind Resistance Home Improvements

Hurricanes and high winds challenge Florida homeowners annually.

Florida homeowners know the challenges they face when high winds damage their homes. To help them protect their homes, the state of Florida has created a number of grant programs designed to help homeowners make wind-resistant improvements. Grants are money given to individuals who qualify to take part in the program without expectation of repayment. Does this Spark an idea?

My Safe Florida Home Grant

The state of Florida established the "My Safe Florida Home" to provide at least 400,000 free site-built, single family homes and residential properties inspections by certified inspectors. The grant assists homeowners with making changes to their homes to mitigate damage caused by high winds or hurricanes. The "My Safe Florida Home" grant is a "matching grant" for $10,000. There is an exemption for the contribution by low-income families.

Mobile Home Tie-Down Program

The state of Florida has allocated about $2.8 million in grant money to educate mobile homeowners on techniques to stabilize and protect their manufactured homes against high winds. This grant money is to be used to equip mobile homes with a tie-down system that utilizes a lateral foundation system with a ground stabilizer plate.

Low to Moderate Income Retrofit

This grant provides money to low- to moderate-income families who qualify for general rehabilitation of their homes to help mitigate the damage caused by hurricanes and high winds. This grant is to help those families who may not otherwise benefit from insurance credits. The funds are dispersed to towns and municipalities who in turn manage the distribution of the grants to homeowners.

Hazard Mitigation Grant Program

This grant is part of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Relief Act, which provides money to homeowners whose homes have already sustained damage from high winds. The grant money is to be used to repair and mitigate any future damage to their homes. The goal is to provide grant money to areas of Florida that have already been identified as being at high risk for high wind structural damage.
