Apply For Low Income Housing In Pennsylvania

Low income housing programs often have waiting lists so don't put off applying.

In Pennsylvania, there are two different low income housing programs: public housing and Section 8. Public housing is available in the form of specific properties available to families that meet the low income requirements. Through Section 8, families are provided vouchers to pay for rent in homes that have been approved by their local Public Housing Authority (PHA). While these programs are administered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), applications are approved by the housing authority in your area.

Instructions

Public Housing

1. Call your local Public Housing Authority to find the names and addresses of the public housing locations local to you . Locations of all PHAs in Pennsylvania are listed on the HUD website.

2. Apply in person at the public housing location. Application forms for public housing are approved by the PHA but must be filed through the public housing location. You will need copies of birth certificates and Social Security cards for all family members who will reside with you. The head of household must also bring a photo ID to be considered. Some public housing facilities will also require bank statements and/or savings books, paycheck stubs, child support payment stubs and any documentation of your income. Proof of childcare in the form of a letter from your childcare provider may also be required. Income requirements vary depending on the sizes of your household and the rental unit you require. Inquire as to income requirements before applying.

3. Ask the public housing personnel at the location how long the approval process takes. If there are no available rentals, you will be added to a waiting list.

Section 8

4. Visit your local PHA to apply for Section 8. Complete all of the paperwork truthfully. Punishment for not doing so includes prison time. Read the document "Things You Should Know" provided by HUD, before completing the application.

5. Contact your local PHA for a complete list of the documents you will need. These will include, but are not limited to, Social Security cards, proof of income and birth certificates for all members in the household. Proof of income includes bank statements and/or savings books, paycheck stubs, child support payment stubs, social security statements and any other documents that could prove your income and expenses.

6. Wait until you hear back from the PHA. When you apply, your name is placed on a waiting list. Once your name reaches the top of the list, the PHA will contact you to schedule a meeting. When the PHA contacts you, ask the PHA what qualifying guidelines you must meet. It is during this meeting that, if approved, a voucher will be provided to you.

7. Look for a rental property that meets Section 8 requirements. The PHA will inform you as to the property size and rental allowance you must adhere to as well as other guidelines, and you will have about 60 days to find your rental. Make sure your landlord will accept Section 8 vouchers. The PHA will schedule an inspection of the property. The property must pass, and follow-up inspections will be completed yearly.
