Refinish A Pool Deck

Refinish a Pool Deck

Wooden pool decks take a beating during cold winters and hot summers. A regular routine of cleaning and refinishing will help protect it from the elements and extend the life of the wood. This project can be slightly labor intensive, but the result is a well-protected deck that looks like new. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Cleaning and Preparing the Pool Deck

1. Sweep the deck with a long-handled push broom. Remove all loose dirt and debris from the surface.

2. Mix 1 cup of powdered oxygen cleaner to 2 gallons of water in a large bucket. Powdered oxygen cleaners can be purchased at any home improvement center.

3. Pour the oxygen cleaner and water mixture onto small sections of the pool deck and wash the surface. Scrub with the push broom and rinse, using a garden hose with a spray nozzle attachment. Allow the deck a day or two to completely dry before continuing the project.

Refinishing a Painted Pool Deck Surface

4. Scrape any old and peeling paint from the deck boards using a scraper. Run a belt sander over any portions that are rough and uneven.

5. Apply a coat of exterior latex paint using a paint brush or sprayer. Follow drying times on the paint container. Add a second coat once the first has completely dried.

6. Spray on a clear deck sealant. This can be purchased at a store like Wal-Mart or Lowe's. It will provide moisture protection for the wood decking material. Allow recommended drying time before using the pool deck.

Refinishing a Stained Pool Deck Surface

7. Use the belt sander to smooth any rough areas on the board surface. Purchase the desired color of deck stain.

8. Apply a coat of stain to the wood deck. Add a second layer if the color appears washed out after the application of the first layer. Follow the stain product drying instructions.

9. Spray on a water sealant coat after the stain completely dries. Since the deck is for pool use, apply a water repellent finish coat. A water resistant sealant will not offer the amount of moisture protection needed.
