Fix A Cracked Refrigerator Light Socket

Replace a refrigerator socket yourself.

All light sockets, including the one in your refrigerator, should be replaced if they crack or break completely. Whether it is a standard bulb socket or more intricate, it can break at any time, and replacing it will be far more beneficial than repairing it. Use a few basic tools and a new socket purchased from your local appliance repair shop to fix the problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet. The repair will not take long, so emptying out the refrigerator should not be necessary. Only remove items from the shelf that blocks the socket.

2. Remove the lightbulb from the socket. Remove the screw that held the bulb in place with a screwdriver. The screw should be deep inside of the socket.

3. Use a screwdriver to pop the bulb socket out of its spot in the refrigerator.

4. Test the voltage of the wires by using a voltage tester. Touch the probes of the voltage tester to the live wires hanging inside of the light socket. No reading should display, considering you have unplugged the refrigerator.

5. Pull the wires down and out of the socket opening using the pliers, and then remove the socket completely.

6. Put the new socket into place. Put the socket over the wires so they hang out the way they did with the old socket. Push the socket in, screw it into place and then put in the new bulb.

7. Plug the refrigerator back in.
