How Get A Donated Roof For My House

Although a new roof is expensive, you may be able to get one for free.

If your home is in need of a new roof and you don't have the funds to pay for one, you may be able to get roofing materials and services donated to you, especially if you have suffered some form of hardship. Roofing companies don't often give their products and services away, but it does happen from time to time. Keep in mind that roofing companies give out new roofs in only the most extreme cases. Alternately, if you have homeowner's insurance and your roof has been damaged by a storm, your insurance company may cover the cost of a new roof for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Roofing Company

1. Call the roofing company and ask about their charitable donation requirements. Ask to speak with the owner, manager or public relations department.

2. Write the company owner or general manager a letter documenting your hardship and respectfully ask for a donated roof. Be persuasive, but also honest. Do not embellish your story. Be sure to mention any information that will help your case, such as your specific hardship, names and ages of any children or elderly people in your care, your job, your education, any scholarships or citizenship awards you have earned, and what you do to help others. Be prepared to substantiate any claims you make.

3. Ask a clergy member to speak to the roofing company on your behalf and to verify your story. Or, if your story is especially dramatic or newsworthy, contact a local television station to explore the possibility of getting your predicament publicized during a news broadcast.

4. Consider asking the roofing company for a donation of labor only, and approach a construction supply company for a donation of materials.

Insurance Company

5. Call your insurance company to notify them of the damage. Take photos to document the damage.

6. Document any interim expenses or repairs. Keep all receipts and invoices of your expenses. You may be able to get reimbursed for such things as cleanup, temporary patches or a replacement digital satellite dish.

7. Call at least three roofing companies and ask them to inspect your roof and give you an estimate for replacing it. There should be no charge for the inspection and estimate. Your insurance company may furnish you with a list of roofing companies, or they may simply ask that you ensure that the roofing company you choose is licensed and insured.

8. Once you and your insurance carrier have agreed upon a roofer and the cost of replacing your roof, the insurance company will write a check to cover the cost.
