Repair An Appliance Plug

The easiest way to repair an appliance electrical outlet plug is to replace the connector with a new one. Most plugs are molded around the electrical wires and the plug lugs. Attempting to tear apart the connector could result in a fire if done incorrectly. Replacing the plug and keeping the original cord is the quickest and safest way to repair a plug. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut off the damaged part of the cord as close to the plug as possible. If the plug is the only damaged part of the cord cut the wire off just behind the plug. Use wire cutters for this task.

2. Cut off 1½ inch of the protective coating on the cord with a pair of wire strippers. Strip approximately ½ inch of insulation off each wire in the cord with your wire strippers.

3. Slide the plug cover over the cord to make it easier to attach the plug cover to the plug once you have the plug installed.

4. Wrap each wire around the screw of the same color on the replacement plug and then tighten the screws with a screwdriver. If the screws on the plug are not color matched to your wires, your plug is not polarized. Secure the green ground wire to the green grounding screw. Secure the black wire to the brass (gold) screw and secure the white wire to the silver screw.

5. Slide the plug cover over the plug and secure it.
