Television Repair Tools

TV repair specialists use devices to measure TV signals and currents.

Televisions are complicated devices with many different components, a large amount of circuitry, delicate resistors, and an array of connections that can change from model to model. Those who want to learn repair TVs must study designs and schematics very carefully to understand how the TV works and pinpoint specific problems. To help in this process, TV repair specialists use a variety of tools, some generic, some highly specialized.

Screwdriver Set

A screwdriver set helps TV repair specialists take apart sections of the TV where they believe a problem is occurring. TVs typically have several different panels that can be removed, in addition to knobs and other devices that can be pried off using a screwdriver. Because there are so many different TV models, a set of screwdrivers with different heads and sizes is very useful.

Current Measuring Devices

There are several different popular current measuring devices, like the ohmmeter (which measures the ohms in a circuit) and the multimeter (which can measure several different electrical properties). This is a vital tool for TV repair specialists, who use the meter to check current for many different devices the TV uses, allowing them to pinpoint devices which are not carrying the current as they should be, or are carrying the wrong quality of current.

Soldering Equipment

For many TV repairs, the problem can be fixed by replacing the broken part with a new version. However, some repairs require detailed wire adjustments, and some parts cannot just be plugged back into the TV. This is where soldering comes in handy. TV repair specialists use soldering equipment to join new parts and fix circuits by rejoining wires.

Test Pattern Generator

A test pattern generator creates a test pattern on the TV screen that shows a color spectrum and often a centering guide. This helps the repair specialist tell if there is anything wrong with the picture quality of the TV itself, as produced by the signal the TV uses. This is very helpful when determining the source of image problems.

Video Microscope

A video microscope is a special microscope that is used to examine the intricate circuits of modern televisions. This allows specialists to spot problems and sections in need of repair more easily. The best kind are video scopes that show the image on a screen as the microscope is passed over the circuit.
