Make My Own Rock Cabinet Knobs

Changing the knobs on your kitchen or bathroom cabinets is an easy and inexpensive way to change the personality of the room. Rock cabinet knobs made from rocks you collect from a nearby stream or your own land bring a bit of nature indoors. These handmade knobs stand out in a rustic cabin or a more contemporary design. Because no two rocks are identical, each knob will be different, adding interest to your decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut the dowel into 5/8-inch sections and sand smooth. Using the 1/8-inch bit, drill a hole through the middle of each section of dowel.

2. Fill the bowl halfway with sand. Arrange your rocks, flat side up, in the sand. Try to keep the rocks fairly level.

3. Mix the epoxy. Using the matchstick, spread the epoxy across one end of the dowel. Try not to get too much epoxy in the hole.

Affix the epoxied dowels to the flat side of the rocks. Press down firmly, but not so hard you sink the rock in the sand. Set aside to dry.

4. Cover the rock's front and back with varnish. Let dry 4 hours to overnight and add a second coat of varnish. You can balance the rocks on their dowel "stems" to dry.

5. Thread a washer onto your wood screw and insert it on the back side of the cabinet. If the cabinet doesn't already have holes for screws, you'll need to drill one with the 1/8-inch drill bit. Add a second washer to the screw once it's all the way through the cabinet, then twist on your knob. Don't force the knob. You don't want to break the wood or pry off the rock.
