Doityourself Stucco Repair

Repairing crumbling stucco isn't difficult if you do the job carefully.

A do-it-yourself project can turn into disaster if you are not properly executing every step. With stucco repair, preparing the surface and applying the stucco properly are absolutely necessary for solid construction. With a basic pre-mixed stucco and flat trowel, you can easily remove the crumbling or chipped sections of stucco and replace them with a strong layer of new stucco. Take your time and achieve professional-looking results.

Instructions

1. Place a series of dropcloths below the stucco wall to catch the weak stucco and reduce cleanup time.

2. Scrape weak, flaking, or crumbling sections of the stucco with a drywall knife and remove them. Sections of the stucco that do not easily respond to the knife are still structurally good and should be left alone.

3. Scrape the surface below the removed stucco with the wire brush. Also brush the edges of the good stucco and barren wall.

4. Spray a mist of water onto the barren wall surface so that it is damp, but not dripping.

5. Hold the builder's hawk in one hand and scoop the stucco onto it, using the trowel. The hawk will allow you to hold the stucco on its flat, portable surface while working.

6. Take the stucco from the hawk and apply it to the wall with the trowel. Smooth it so that it is level with the already present stucco.

7. Soften the edge between the new stucco and existing stucco by rubbing a damp sponge over the still-wet repair. The stucco repair will fully cure within a week.
