Move A Giant Pumpkin

Though some pumpkins may be only relatively gigantic, others are impossible for one person to move without help.

Kids and grownups marvel at the way giant pumpkins grow from a tiny seed into a 500-lb. gargantuan fruit. But if you want to move it, how do you without using heavy equipment? Count on at least one strong helper for every 100 lbs. of pumpkin. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the approximate weight of your pumpkin by measuring its circumference with a tape measure from stem-end to blossom-end, and on around to the stem-end again. Estimate that a pumpkin with a 105-inch circumference is about 300 lbs., and a pumpkin with a 120-inch circumference is about 400 lbs. For every additional 10 inches of circumference, estimate another 100 lbs. of weight. Have a strong lifter available for every 75 lbs. to 100 lbs. of estimated pumpkin weight.

2. Bring a canvas or quilt to the pumpkin and fold it in half. Be careful not to touch the stem when trying to move the pumpkin. Slide the folded half under the pumpkin past midway by having your lifters gently roll the pumpkin up to slide the canvas or quilt under. Roll the pumpkin up and off the other side so that you can unfold the quilt fully under the pumpkin.

3. Ask all lifters to surround the pumpkin and take hold of a piece of quilt or canvas. Move the pumpkin carefully to its desired location. If you're moving it into a truck, have some cushioning such as foam waiting to set the pumpkin down on, and leave the pumpkin on its moving blanket until in its final display position. Remove the quilt or canvas in reverse of the method used to put it under the pumpkin.
