Deramax for Dogs
Deramaxx is the brand name for deracoxib, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) pain reliever for dogs. It's used particularly for canine osteoarthritis and other joint issues. Twenty percent of adult dogs experience symptoms of arthritis that are severe enough to negatively affect their quality of life. Deramaxx can help reduce inflammation and pain associated with this disease.
How It Works
Deramaxx is a prescription drug to control the symptoms of arthritis such as pain, inflammation, swelling and redness by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that activate inflammation and pain. By reducing the inflammation and swelling in joints, this drug helps dogs move more freely and comfortably, helping to improve their quality of life.
Symptoms It Treats
Whether a dog's arthritis is mild or severe, Deramaxx is purported to help treat the discomfort associated with this disease. Many dogs with osteoarthritis have difficulty climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars and sometimes even standing up after lying down. A dog with this disease may limp. If the arthritis affects his hips, his entire back end may sway back and forth in an effort to reduce the movement, and subsequent pain, in his hip joints.

Deramaxx is a chewable, beef-flavored tablet, which makes it easy to administer. It's formulated to provide relief from pain and inflammation for 24 hours. Deramaxx is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be effective in treating canine arthritis pain. It's safe enough to give your dog every day. It doesn't contain steroids, which have been proven to be detrimental to a dog's health with prolonged use.
Dosage
A dog's weight determines the appropriate daily dosage of Deramaxx. For small dogs between 13-26 pounds, the dosage is 25mg. For dogs between 27-44 pounds, the dosage is 50mg. For larger dogs, or dogs weighing between 45-82 pounds, the dosage is 37.5 mg, generally given as 1/2 of a 75mg tablet. Dogs between 83-165 pounds should receive a 75mg dose. Very large dogs, or dogs weighing 166-220 pounds, should receive 100mg.
Warnings
In some dogs, Deramaxx can cause mild side effects such as loose stools or vomiting or a change in eating habits. He may drink more, and thus urinate more. He may also eat less and become less active. If these issues persist for more than 24 hours, contact your vet. Also, talk to your vet about other medications your dog is taking, as Deramaxx may interact negatively with other drugs.
