More people in the United States are choosing to keep their current cars rather than buying new ones. AutoPacific found in a July 2009 study that 59 percent of people weren't planning to shop for a new car for at least four more years. This is beneficial to auto mechanics, since more older cars on the road usually equates to a higher demand for service and repair. While many mechanics work as an employee of a dealer or repair shop, others choose to become independent and start their own business. 1. Get experience as a mechanic. Know service and repair all different makes and models of cars by completing an educational program specifically focused on automotive repair. Spend one to two years after training working under the guidance of an experienced mechanic, preferably one with certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Apply for ASE certification for yourself at the end of your first year of work experience. Being ASE-certified can assist you in getting customers once you open your own shop.
2. Write a business plan. Determine how much money is needed to start your shop, as well as how long it will take before you make a profit. Include plans for marketing and advertising your business, as well as an analysis of your competition and what other threats exist to the success of your business based on your location.
3. Find a facility. Use the services of a commercial real-estate agent to assist you in finding a location suitable for your automobile repair shop. Seek out an empty garage space with overhead garage doors, built-in lifts and storage for tools. The shop should also contain a spot for your office, as well as a space to talk to and wait on customers. Consider using the services of a freelance bookkeeper if you have no training or knowledge in managing the financial aspects of a business.
