Plasma TVs usually have bigger screens than CRT models.
Plasma TVs work by enclosing neon and xenon gases between two glass panels. These gases light up when a small electrical charge passes through them, forming plasma and producing vibrant pictures. Plasma screens offer advantages over CRT sets, as they usually are bigger, with thinner widths, allowing wall mounting to save space. However, plasma TVs can suffer picture problems that following some basic steps can often remedy.

1. Examine the cables that run from your plasma television to your cable box provider and devices such as games consoles and surround sound systems. Make sure all cables are connected to the right sockets. Composite and HDMI connections are usually color-coded to match the outlets at the rear of your TV. Examine the coaxial cable that runs from your cable box to check if it has any tears or dents that can result in image interference.
2. Examine the length of the cables connected to your TV set. Very long cables of 10 meters or more can often yield poor pictures. This is because the signal weakens due to the distance it has to cover before producing an image. Position devices such as Blu-ray Players or cable boxes closer to your TV. This may improve sound and picture quality.
3. Check your user manual to see if your set has a self-diagnostic feature, which you can use to repair sound and picture problems. Access this feature by pressing the Menu button on your remote control and locating it on-screen. For some plasma sets, you may have to hold down a button on the remote control. Check your user manual for precise instructions on access diagnostic tools.
4. Treat dead pixels. Apply a damp cloth to the affected areas on-screen. Dead pixels are pixels of a fixed color that do not change with the displayed image. Download or purchase pixel repair programs if a damp cloth fails to improve the problem. Pixel repair software can identify problem pixels in your plasma set and restore image quality.
5. Press the Menu button on your TV remote to access picture settings, if you are receiving dark or blurry images. Adjust the contrast, color, sharpness and brightness settings using the + and - or left and right arrows.
