Security systems can detect breaches in doors and windows, pick up on motion inside the home, and contact emergency services directly in the event of an emergency. Security systems can malfunction like any other device, and while security companies can provide repair services, you can do some repairs yourself fairly easily. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Identify the problem. If you're getting a lot of false alarms from one area, inspect the area the alarm is registering to see if a door or window is loose or if something seems wrong with a sensor. Check your owner's manual to run a self-diagnostic from the main panel and it could tell you where the problem lies.
2. Replace sensors as needed. Get them from the security company or an electronics store. The type of sensor may vary, but basically you turn off the system and unscrew the sensor with a screwdriver from its bracket and pull out the wires. Reattach the wires to the new sensor and screw it back into the bracket where the old one was. You should be able to tell if it is working or not when you turn the system back on.
3. Check the power supplies. If you have motion detectors that are battery powered, a low battery could cause false readings or no readings at all. You should be able to either twist the detectors open to reveal the battery or unscrew it with a screwdriver. Insert a new battery, reinstall the detector and see if it makes a difference in the system status.
