Finding enough funds to keep operating can be a constant challenge for not-for-profit organizations. Federal, state and local government agencies are a helpful resource. Government grants can be used to pay for costs such as operating expenses, direct services, special programs or capital projects. Each grant opportunity has its own set of rules, guidelines and deadlines, so make sure to read all of the fine print before applying.
Head Start Replacement Grantee: Morrisania Section of the Bronx
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families offers the Head Start Replacement Grantee: Morrisania Section of the Bronx, New York, grant to public or private nonprofit organizations. The grant offers more than $1.4 million to support a head start educational program in the Morrisania region of the Bronx. Qualified organizations must provide preschool and early childhood educational services to low-income children and families in the target service area. Services may be focused on improving health, nutrition and social skills as well as education. Grantees must match at least 20 percent of the grant with funds from other sources.

New York State Council on the Arts Grants
The New York State Council on the Arts, or NYSCA, offers grant opportunities to nonprofits incorporated in the state. NYSCA provides grant funding in several categories, including arts education, architecture, planning and design, dance, folk arts, literature, music and visual arts. Each category offers its own grants with specific deadlines and guidelines. Grant amounts vary by program, but must be a minimum of $2,500. Types of support can include general operating support, general program support, project support and funds for capital projects.

Brownfield Areas Opportunity Program Grants
The New York State Division of Coastal Resources offers the Brownfield Areas Opportunity Program. Community-based nonprofits with 501(c)3 status that work to restore brownfields, or blighted, dormant land, are eligible to apply for funds. Qualifying nonprofits must meet several requirements. The community in which the organization operates must demonstrate characteristics of depressed economic status, such as high unemployment and commercial vacancy rates, declining property values, and low-income residents. Additionally, more than 25 percent of the organization’s Board of Directors must live in the community where the brownfield restoration will take place. The grant focus is to create revitalization plans that involve the community and address the problems caused by multiple brownfields, rather than focusing on cleaning up a single site. Grants will supply up to 90 percent of the costs of planning and implementing revitalization strategies.
