The underside of a mobile home is also referred to as the belly. This is where the sub-floor, insulation, pipes and wiring are located in the trailer. Even with proper skirting, rodents and small animals can gain access to the underside of the trailer. These animals cause damage by building nests, creating holes for warmth and looking for food. If the damage is not repaired, cold air and moisture can enter the trailer from underneath, causing problems inside the home. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove a section of the skirting. Make the hole large enough to get material through, along with yourself.
2. Use a flashlight to look for holes and rips in the fabric. Look for nests and signs of rodents or animals underneath the trailer. Clear away any debris if noted.
3. Remove the felt or plastic that covers the insulation in the damaged sections. The underside of a mobile home is divided into sections by beams; each section can be repaired separately.
4. Check for missing insulation around the damaged area. Inspect the area for damage to the sub-floor of the trailer. Joints, seams and gaps around pipes are the most likely locations for damage.
5. Disconnect any pipes and wires between the insulation and the sub-floor in the damaged area. You may need to shut off the water or electrical supply if you cannot safely move the pipes or wires to one side of the area.
6. Repair any damage to the sub-floor. Seal seams and gaps with silicone foam. Stuff insulation into any holes or rips in the insulation. Remove hanging insulation and replace with new insulation.
7. Reconnect or move the pipes and wiring back into position. Turn on the water or electrical supply. Make sure everything is functional. Caulk any seams in the pipes, as needed, to prevent leaks into the insulation.
8. Apply a new sheet of covering over the insulation. Tack one end of the sheet at one side of the trailer and work across the section to the other side. Make sure the ends are tight and secure.
