Federal grants are available for some roof replacement projects.
Several federal programs sponsor grants to be used for the repair or replacement of residential and commercial roofs for energy efficiency. Such grants are used to cover the costs of roofing projects, including the purchase of equipment, supplies and labor expenses. Generally, these grants don't have to be repaid. However, some federal programs require recipients to use other sources to fund a percentage of their projects. Does this Spark an idea?
Weatherization Assistance Program
The Department of Energy funds the Weatherization Assistance Program. This program gives grants to homeowners to finance projects to make their homes energy efficient. WAP approves programs such as replacing and building roofs, insulating windows, heating systems and walls. These improvements are provided to lower income households for free. The program's funds are limited to $6,500 per project.
The WAP does not distribute funds to individuals. The Department of Energy website encourages those interested to contact local agencies to apply for the program.
Very Low Income Housing Repair Program
The Department of Agriculture funds grants for the Very Low Income Housing Repair Program. Grants are used to fund projects that remove and repair homes in very low income communities that are considered to be a health and safety hazard. Grant funds repair, rebuild and renovate homes from the inside out including roofs after all hazards have been removed. Eligible applicants for this grant must be 62 years old or older and demonstrate a financial need. Recipients are restricted from selling their homes for a three-year period. Doing so will require the recipient to repay the grant funds.

Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements Program
The Department of Agriculture sponsors the Energy Efficiency Improvement Program. The program provides grants to fund energy efficient and renewable energy projects such as the installation of solar panel roofs. The grants funds projects for small rural and agricultural businesses and producers such as ranchers and farmers to help them reduce their energy costs and consumption. The grant funds up to 25 percent of project costs.
