Historic grants help preserve older buildings.
Owning an historic home is sometimes a costly idea, more so if the house requires a large amount of work. Sometimes state and local governments can help with the funding. In Ohio, historic building owners have the option of getting a grant from the Ohio Historical Society or receiving a tax credit from the state government. Does this Spark an idea?
Heritage Home Program
Cuyahoga County, Summit County and Lorain County are all part of the Heritage Home Program in Ohio, which is run by the Cleveland Restoration Society. The county the building sits in determines the cost associated with the program. Those in Cuyahoga County pay an origination fee and a technical fee, while the Summit County program doesn't charge fees. The programs offer assistance in improvement and restoration projects and they provide low-interest loans.

Certified Local Government Grants
The Ohio Historical Society oversees the Certified Local Government Grants program. Fifty different communities take part in the program, including Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus. The state has a specific amount of money set aside each year for historic preservation programs. Each community has the option to request funds for use on historic homes.

Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit
The tax credit program works by giving homeowners the chance to write off the cost of some improvement projects. The building owner must apply for the tax credit, and the state approves a certain number of applications based on the amount of funds available.

Neighborhood Historic Preservation Program
The Neighborhood Historic Preservation Program is open only to those who own historic homes in Cleveland. Homes must fall into one of the approved wards or neighborhoods for the homeowner to receive assistance. The program is limited to homes built prior to 1956, and if it's a rental property, it must have three or fewer units. Homeowners receive free technical help and financial help from Key Bank in the form of a low-interest loan.
