New York features one of the top concentrations of attorneys, and it is also one of the top paying areas for attorneys in the U.S., according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008 there were nearly 70,000 lawyers working in New York state; labor statisticians note that the bulk of these lawyers were working in jobs in the New York City metropolitan area. Rely on three kinds of resources to find a job as an attorney in New York City.
Instructions
1. Connect with a legal recruiter. Legal recruitment firms, placement consultants and attorney recruiters in New York City can help in your search for a job. Recruiter firms such as Mestel and Company or BCG Recruitment post job listings, offer career advice and share your resume with law firms or other organizations looking for attorneys to hire. Legal recruiters also can help you identify contract law jobs or short-term legal placements while you conduct a more long-term search for a job at a New York City law firm.
2. Contact New York law firms directly. If you specialize in a particular area of the law, or if you have specific New York law firms where you want to work, contact the firm recruiters directly. Major law firms in New York City post information about their recruitment cycles, hiring criteria and human resources contact information on their websites; for smaller firms, you will need to call the firm's offices directly and ask to speak to a human resources representative or area recruiter. Although some firms have a specific recruitment cycle when they hire new attorneys -- such as only hiring in the spring or fall -- many will still accept resumes to hold for review when the hiring cycle begins. Be sure to ask each law firm's recruiter if they will accept resumes outside the recruitment cycle, or if they offer short-term contract positions in the periods outside recruitment times.
3. Use resources developed by state and national professional organizations. Professional groups that represent lawyers in the U.S. and in New York publish career resources, job boards and advice to help you find an attorney job in New York City. The New York State Bar Association publishes listings of open attorney jobs in New York City, and it allows you to upload a resume for review by recruiters and hiring directors. The American Bar Association also offers a schedule of local career fairs, advice on getting your ideal attorney job and job listings by city and state.
