Using a drywall repair kit is a perfect solution for small repairs, or repairs less than 10 inches in diameter. These kits allow even a beginner to patch a hole in drywall. There is no measuring or installing bracing involved when you use a drywall repair kit. These kits are readily available at most home remodeling centers, they are inexpensive, and everything that you need for small repairs is included in the kit. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Hold the section of provided drywall over the hole and trace around it. Use your drywall saw to cut out the traced pattern. If your hole is smaller than 10-inches you can cut the supplied section of drywall to a smaller size. Place the new section of drywall up to the hole that you cut out to make sure that it will fit in place, but do not push it all the way in; it may fall down in the wall. If the section of drywall seems too tight cut the hole a little larger.
2. Place a provided drywall clip into each corner of the new section of drywall. Drywall clips are designed so that you do not have to install bracing. The tabs slide onto the front or face of your new section of drywall and then you simply press the new drywall into the hole.
3. Apply a piece of drywall tape over each seam, or around the perimeter of the square. Most kits will come with a sticky back mesh tape for ease of use. Use a box knife to cut the appropriate size lengths of drywall tape.
4. Pour half of the 1-pound bag of drywall compound into the mixing tub and slowly begin to add water. Your mixture should be at least as thick as a brownie mix. Use the available stir stick to mix the drywall compound.
5. Use your putty knife to spread a thin, even coat over the tape and allow the compound to dry. Many kits use a 45-minute compound. This means that the mixed drywall compound will set up in 45 minutes and you can then apply the final coat.
6. Use the supplied sandpaper to sand the surface of the patch smooth after it has completely dried.
