Dental Hygienist Courses In Canada

Many schools in Canada offer dental hygienist courses.

There are currently 40 dental hygiene programs that are formally accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. Courses are available in both diploma and bachelor’s degree formats. Topics typically include dental anatomy, radiology, scaling and teeth cleaning techniques, oral health education, whitening methods, histology, microbiology, peridontics and dental materials, in addition to hands-on clinical training.

Ontario

The majority of dental hygiene courses are in Ontario, so there are many options to choose from. Three schools in Toronto offer two-year diploma programs in dental hygiene: Toronto College of Dental Hygiene and Auxiliaries, Regency Dental Hygiene Academy and George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology. Additional dental hygiene courses in the greater metropolitan area of Toronto include an 18-month diploma at the Ontario Dental Education Institute in Ancaster, a two-year diploma at Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology in Orillia, an 18-month diploma at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene in Mississauga, an 18-month diploma at the Oxford College of Arts, Business and Technology in Scarborough and a two-year diploma at the Canadian Institute of Dental Hygiene in Hamilton. Elsewhere in southern Ontario, St. Clair College of Applied Science and Technology in Windsor, Niagara College in Welland and Durham College in Oshawa all offer a two-year, full-time diploma program in dental hygiene. Fanshawe College in London offers a two-year diploma in dental hygiene that can be transferred toward a bachelor of science in human science at the University of Western Ontario or a bachelor of health administration at Athabasca University.

There are three dental hygiene programs in the Ottawa area. La Cite Collegiale offers the region’s only French-language program. The Canadian National Institute of Health offers a three-semester dental hygiene program. A two-year diploma is offered by Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology in Nepean, a suburb of Ottawa. In northern Ontario, Confederation College of Applied Arts and Technology in Thunder Bay and Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology in North Bay and in Sudbury both offer two-year diploma programs in dental hygiene. College Boreal in Sudbury offers the region’s only French-language dental hygiene program.

Eastern Canada and Quebec

John Abbot College offers Quebec’s only English-language, six-semester dental hygiene program in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, west of Montreal. The College Edouard-Montpetit in Longueil, College de L’Outaouais in Hull, College Maisonneuve in Montreal, Cegep Saint-Hyacinthe, Cegep Francois-Xavier Garneau in Quebec City, Cegep de Trois-Riveriers and Cegep de Chicoutimi all offer a two-year diploma program in dental hygiene. In New Brunswick, Oulton College offers a 20-month diploma in dental hygiene. Dalhousie University in Halifax offers the region’s only baccalaureate degree program, a bachelor of dental hygiene, in addition to a two-year diploma program.

Western Provinces

The majority of dental hygiene programs in western Canada are in British Columbia. Vancouver Island University, Vancouver Community College, Camosun College in Victoria, University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford and College of New Caledonia in Prince George all offer a two-year diploma in dental hygiene. The Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene offers an 18-month diploma program. The University of British Columbia in Vancouver offers the region's only bachelor's degree, a four-year baccalaureate in dental sciences with a major in dental hygiene.

In the mid-western region of Canada, the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Regina and University of Manitoba in Winnipeg both offer a two-year diploma in dental hygiene. The University of Alberta in Edmonton offers both a three-year diploma in dental hygiene and a four year bachelor of science program with a specialization in dental hygiene.
