Veteran Housing Grants

Veteran Housing Grants

Returning home from war is a complex issue. Veterans may be disabled, suffering from mental trauma and find themselves homeless or without the ability to pay their mortgage. Many veterans are able to take advantage of the VA home loans which have less restrictive requirements for veterans. There are also housing grant options that can help veterans transition back to society.

Transitional Housing Grants

Transitional housing grants are grants offered to organizations seeking to purchase and renovate housing for homeless Veterans. The goal of the housing must be to help homeless Veterans gain the necessary resources to transition from homeless to financially functioning in society. Grant recipients are not allowed to lease property nor can they use it to renovate a property that will later be transferred to the Veteran. Transitional housing grants don't support permanent housing for the Veteran. Organizations who receive these grants can receive additional per diem funds if at least 75% of their tenants are Veterans. Interested organizations can obtain more information about these grants by calling (877) 332-0334.

Specially Adapted Housing Grant

The specially adapted housing grant is designated for war Veterans who have been seriously injured and disabled through military service. This grant can be given in various denominations with maximum grant funds being $50,000 to modify the home for Veteran use. In order to qualify for the specially adapted housing grant, one of three conditions must be met. The first qualification is the Veteran has lost the use of both lower extremities. Another condition that qualifies Veterans is blindness in both eyes plus permanent full disability in one lower extremity. The third qualification is the inability to use one lower extremity coupled with another disability that prevents the Veteran from using crutches or a wheelchair to get around. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs at (800) 827-1000 for more information.

Special Homes Adaptations Grant

The special home adaptations grant is another grant available to veterans permanently disabled in service-related duties. This grant is available up to $10,000 for the modification and adaptation of the Veteran's home based on disabilities not described in the specially adapted housing grant. To qualify for this grant, Veterans must meet one of two conditions. The first is blindness in both eyes with eyesight measured at 5/200 visual acuity or less. Whereas the specially adapted housing grant focuses on loss of lower limbs, this special homes adaptations grant is available to Veterans who have lost the use of both hand. Obtain more information by contacting the Department of Veteran Affairs at (800) 827-1000.
