Homeowner Renovation Grants

Homeowners can apply for renovation grants.

Homeowners around the country can apply for grants to cover the cost of home renovations. These grants can also be used for land acquisitions, purchasing of supplies and equipment as well as paying for administrative costs. These grants benefit low-income homeowners and veterans with disabilities. Recipients are not required to repay these home renovation grants.

Self-Help Homeownership Program

Homeowners can participate in the building phase of their homes through the Self-Help Homeownership Program (SHOP). Sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), SHOP grants are used to acquire land and infrastructure to build homes for low-income homebuyers. One of SHOP’s requirements for homeowners is to volunteer physical labor, or ‘sweat equity’, while their homes are being built. Eligible applicants for grants are national and regional nonprofit organizations that have SHOP experience. Twenty percent of the grants can be used for administrative costs. Total project costs cannot exceed $15,000.

VA Specially Adapted Housing for Veterans

Veteran homeowners who have service or non-service related disabilities can apply for home renovation grants through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). The Specially Adapted Housing for Veterans program provides three renovation grants for veterans: Special Home Adaptations (SHA), Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and Home Improvements and Special Alterations (HISA). SHA and SAH grants, worth up to $50,000 and $10,000 respectively, are used by veterans with service-related disabilities to make modifications to their homes. HISA grants, which are available to veterans with both non-service ($1,200) and service-related ($4,100) disabilities, can be used for alterations to make veterans homes more accessible.

Housing Preservation Grants

Homeowners in communities of less than 20,000 residents can apply for funds through the Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) program. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds this grant program, which pays for renovations and repairs done to homes, housing units and rental and co-op properties. Eligible applicants for these grants include homeowners, landlords, co-op managers and rental property owners who allow low-income residents to live in their rental units. Nonprofit organizations, state, local and tribal government entities are eligible sponsors for these grants. The HPG program requires funds to be used within a two-year period.
