Septic Tank Lid Removal

Septic tanks need to be cleaned on average every three to five years. On occasion, an interior baffle must be repaired or replaced. In these cases, it's necessary to open the septic tank to gain access to the interior. Most tanks are constructed with a small lid located in the center of the top of the tank. This is your only true access point to the interior of the septic tank. Does this Spark an idea?

Locating the Septic Tank

Before you can open the tank lid, locate the septic tank itself. Most area codes require that the septic tank be a minimum of 10 feet from the foundation of the house. Most contractors and homeowners will place the tank at the minimum distance to reduce the amount of piping needed and to ensure the proper flow of water and waste to the tank. The location and direction of the drain pipe comping out of your home will also be a good indication of the tank's location. Dig several test holes until you locate the tank. It should be buried no more than 12 inches below the surface.

Excavating the Tank

Next, begin the excavation process. Remove the dirt until the lid is completely revealed. Slope the walls to prevent them from collapsing onto the tank. Clear the dirt away at least 12 inches on all sides of the lid seam. Once the bulk of the dirt is moved, sweep away the remaining dirt. It is very important you allow as little dirt as possible to enter the septic tank. With all dirt and debris removed, you are ready to open the lid.

Removing the Lid

Wedge a small screwdriver into the seam around the lid. The fit will be very tight so you will need to use force. If at all possible, do not use a hammer to avoid chipping or cracked the lid or tank. Once the seam is opened slightly, insert a pry-bar and pry the lid up. The lid will be made of concrete and can be quite heavy. You may need to have someone available to help you lift the lid out of the hole. On some tanks, metal cables are sealed into the cement to form handles. If these are present and not rusted, use them to lift the lid free.

If pumping out the septic tank, do not allow anyone to enter the tank. The lack of oxygen in the tank can result in rapid suffocation, lose of consciousness and even death.
