Service A Laptop

You can clean a laptop with common household items

The performance of an electronic device may suffer over time, because of the wear-and-tear effects of everyday use. Over time, a laptop may collect dust and other contaminants associated with routine use, and unless cleaned, the device will become slower. Proper maintenance practices will improve how the laptop looks and feels, improve its productivity and performance and also significantly enhance its lifespan.

Instructions

Process

1. Read the owner's manual for instructions or recommendations from the manufacturer on servicing the laptop. Although most laptops are essentially the same in terms of form-factor, physical differences due to size and model should be taken into account.

2. Switch off the laptop and disconnect it from the power supply. Place the laptop on a level surface at a convenient height for you. Remember to unplug the power cord and remove the battery under the unit.

3. Clean the LCD display panel. Place one hand behind the top cover of the laptop (the plastic shell behind the LCD panel) for support, and clean the display with a clean cloth. Use a soft, damp cloth to remove surface dust from the screen, wiping gently across the screen in one direction. Start from the top-left edge and work your way to the bottom-right edge, in smooth gentle motions. Never use tissues or paper napkins to clean the LCD panel because the abrasive texture may scratch the screen.

4. Clean the external plastic casing with a soft, damp cloth. Use a cleaning agent to remove dust from the surface; spray on a corner of the cloth and wipe across the face of the case, from end to end. Blow off dust from crevices on the bottom and the sides, and clean with the cloth. When done, wipe off excess fluid with a dry cloth.

5. Clean the keyboard using a can of compressed air. A laptop's keyboard collects the most contaminants because its grooves are exposed, and are ideal to trap dust particles. Refer to your manual to find out if the keys can be taken apart. Remove surface dust by wiping the keyboard with a soft cloth, then spray from the compressed air can, holding the nozzle at a forty-five degree angle. Keeping the nozzle about an inch from the keyboard, spray into the horizontal grooves first and then the vertical grooves.

6. Clean all exposed ports. Use cotton swabs to gently remove dust from the ports; do not use liquids or sprays. Ports are sensitive components-be careful when you clean the exposed regions, as the slightest prick in the wrong direction may damage the entire component.
