Instructions
Small Punctures and Seam Separation
1. Clean the area to be patched with dish soap and water. Use a putty knife to scrape away any loose paint or coating.
2. Coat the area with an aluminum roof coating, using a paintbrush. Extend the coating at least 2 inches beyond the hole or seam.
3. Cut a piece of asphalt-impregnated glass membrane to serve as a patch, using scissors. Press the patch onto the wet roof coating.
4. Paint another coat of aluminum roof coating on top and over the edges of the patch.
Large Holes
5. Clean the area to be patched with dish soap and water. Use a putty knife to scrape away any loose paint or coating.
6. Cut a square piece of galvanized metal to serve as a patch. Galvanized metal can be cut with tin snips, a grinder with a cutoff wheel, or an electric saw with a metal cutting blade. Cut the patch so it extends 3 inches beyond the hole in all directions.
7. Center the patch over the hole and drill pilot holes around the perimeter of the patch. Drill only through the patch and the metal roof, not the trusses. Screw the patch to the roof metal with the drill and metal screws.
8. Apply a bead of metal roof sealant caulk along the edges of the patch to seal the seam. Allow the caulk to cure.
9. Paint over the edges of the patch and the screw heads with roof coating, using a paintbrush.
Gaps Around Flashing, Pipes and Ducts
10. Clean the area to be patched with dish soap and water. Use a putty knife to scrape away any loose paint or coating.
11. Spray the area to be patched with a thin coat of aerosol roof patch spray. Hold the can about 12 inches from the surface and apply in consistent, short and slightly overlapping strokes. You will see the spray expanding and filling the gap.
12. Build up additional thin coats of the aerosol spray patch as needed to fill and coat the gap.
