Help Repair Homes For Lowincome Families

Volunteering to help with home repairs may be appropriate if you'd like to help less fortunate families but cannot make a financial contribution. Many organizations accept volunteers to help low-income families make necessary repairs to the structure of their home. Often, donations fund these programs, but you may need to use your own tools and equipment.

Instructions

1. Search for opportunities on the Volunteer Match website. Since the opportunity to help disadvantaged families will vary by location, you can save time by searching a website that acts as an aggregator of such opportunities. Search for "home repair" within a short distance from your ZIP code. You may find a national organization that has a project in your area, or you may find a small program that runs on an as-needed basis. Select the most appropriate opportunity based on distance, schedule and skill requirement. Click the "I want to help!" button for your charity of choice. Provide basic contact information such as your name, ZIP code and phone number, and a representative from the charity will contact you with more information on getting started with the volunteer program.

2. Visit a local church and discuss volunteer opportunities with an administrator or member of the clergy. Depending on the needs of the community and the budget of the church, there may be available home-repair opportunities.

3. Contact your local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Depending on the needs of your community, Habitat for Humanity may organize groups of volunteers to make home repairs. Team leaders are assigned to organize, recruit and prepare teams to work on home repairs. Six to 10 individuals are matched with a homeowner in need and work on home repairs for periods of about two to four days. To find your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, visit its website and enter your ZIP code.
