Become An Auto Body Worker

Auto body workers have a wide variety of skills.


Auto body workers have a wide range of responsibilities. They may bang the dents out of a recently wrecked car or repaint a new door that was damaged beyond repair. Other auto body workers fix the inner workings of the vehicle that has been damaged in an accident in order to get it running again. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, auto body workers are in large demand despite the negative changes to the economy.


Instructions


1. Take classes to learn the basics of auto body repair. Although you can often get an entry-level position with just a high school education, you have a better chance of advancement when you take classes on various aspects of the job. Look for local trade schools that offer certificates in collision repair.


2. Start your career at entry level if you can't find a higher position. Work hard and prove yourself to your employer. Jump at opportunities to do extra work in vehicle painting or technology to show your willingness to work on harder auto body work. With some time, you should be able to move up in the company.


3. Start an apprenticeship to learn do complicated collision repair. Ask around at the auto body shop to see if anyone is willing to take you on as an apprentice. This will give you more real-world education on repairing crashed vehicles than you would get from a teacher in a classroom.


4. Gain certification to prove your knowledge of auto body repair. The Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests auto body workers get a certificate from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. This will improve your credentials and increase the odds of getting a high position in an auto body repair shop.


5. Continue your education throughout your career as an auto body worker. There continues to be changes in automotive technology. What may have worked to bang dents out of a car door ten years ago might not work now. Take regular classes to make sure that your skills stay honed over the years.
