Cleaning Solutions For Slate On A House

Houses often have a slate veneer.

You can use homemade cleaning solutions to remove stains from slate on your home. Slate is a natural stone that is sensitive to mild acid cleaners such as those made with white vinegar. Make your cleaning solution at home to save money and to control the chemical use in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Hydrogen Peroxide

Diluted hydrogen peroxide is a mild alkaline cleaning solution that cleans slate without damaging it. To dilute it, mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 3 parts water. This will dilute it enough so that it is safe to use. Spray the solution on the slate and scrub the dirt away with a soft bristled brush.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another natural alkaline cleaning solution. Baking soda is food grade, so it is safe to use around children and pets. Add enough water to the baking soda to make a thick paste the same consistency as toothpaste. Scrub the baking soda paste into stains that you are not able to remove with other cleaning solutions. The baking soda will act as a very mild abrasive to remove the stain.

Warm Water

You can use plain warm water to remove stains and dirt from the surface of slate on your home. Do not use a pressure washer as it can pit and crack slate. To clean the slate, use a low-pressure nozzle on your hose and spray the entire area. Gently scrub the dirt off with a soft-bristled brush. Never use wire bristles or stiff bristles as they will scratch the slate.

Detergent

Use liquid dish detergent to remove stains. This is particularly useful if you have grease stains that you cannot remove with hydrogen peroxide, baking soda or a plain water solution. Add several drops of detergent to warm water until the water is sudsy. Apply the cleaning solution to the slate with a soft-bristled brush.
