Slab foundation cracks can be more serious than they appear. Often, severe damage that begins in the middle of the slab may only reveals itself on the outside of the slab through fine cracks. Before repairing the cracks yourself, have them examined by a contractor to ensure that your home or other structure is not in danger. Once you are given the green light, you should repair the cracks using a product that is strong but flexible, to accommodate weather changes. Other concrete repairs may be made with a patch or skim coat, but slab foundation cracks should be filled with epoxy. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Open the kit and remove all of the plastic injection ports. Cut through each of the plastic tabs holding the cap to the port using a pair of sharp scissors, to separate the two pieces. Check that the ports are clean and free of dust and debris.
2. Test the size of the injection ports by attempting to insert one into the crack; it should go in far enough to stay secure even when you let go. Rout the crack to make it slightly wider, if necessary. Make the crack as evenly wide as possible from one end to the other.
3. Scrub the prepared cracks with a dampened stiff-bristled brush to remove all of the dust. Let the concrete dry completely for 24 to 48 hours. Push an injection port into either end of the crack and place the rest along the crack at even intervals.
4. Dip a small paintbrush into the epoxy adhesive and apply it over the entire crack, between and around the injection ports, and along the edges on each side. Do not apply adhesive over the ports. Work the adhesive as far into the crack as possible.
5. Let the adhesive sit about three minutes. Insert the tip of the epoxy tube into the lowest injection port and squeeze epoxy into the port until you can see it moving behind the next highest port. Place the epoxy tube in the next port and fill it in the same manner. Continue filling the ports from the bottom up, and cover each of the injection ports with its corresponding cap.
6. Wait 48 hours. Tap each port sideways with a hammer to loosen it and remove the loosened ports by hand . Scrape away wayward epoxy from around the crack using the edge of a small paint scraper.
