Help for Low Income Seniors
Several government assistance programs exist to help senior citizens who struggle on low incomes. Seniors in need must meet qualify and meet eligibility requirements. Medicaid, food stamps and housing assistance are just a few of the options available to aid low income seniors.
Food Stamps
Anyone can apply for food stamps, including seniors. Many seniors who are living off their Social Security checks will find that they qualify. 2009 stipulations require that applicants cannot possess more than $2,000 in assets (excluding a home), but for senior citizens, this limit is raised to $3,000. Some income restrictions may apply, but generally, low income seniors will qualify without a problem. To apply for food stamps, visit a local Social Security office. After being accepted, senior citizens and other applicants can then use their food stamps to purchase food at participating grocers.
Medicaid
The United States Department of Health and Human Services offers Medicaid for those "who can't afford medical care pay for some or all of their medical bills," according to the department website. Low income seniors may qualify for this type of assistance. Each state has differing eligibility requirements that must be met before an applicant may be accepted into the program. Depending on one's income, Medicaid will either pay the medical bills entirely or require a small co-payment to be met. Seniors with limited income and resources can use Medicaid to help pay for hospice services or nursing home care. Apply online or at any state social services department.
Prescription Assistance
Gilbert Guides, an online resource for those taking care of seniors, states that "the majority of pharmaceutical companies offer 'discount medication' programs and/or prescription assistance services, provided, of course, that these seniors can prove financial hardship. Though many low-income seniors take advantage of these incredible discount offers, many more are unaware that these prescription assistance programs exist". Housing Assistance
Housing choice vouchers are the most commonly known form of housing assistance for low income citizens. These vouchers allow accepted applicants to receive affordable, decent and safe housing through the private sector. According to the U.S. Department of Housing, "a housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the PHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program". This program helps many low income seniors afford housing, although there may be a waiting list.
Other Forms of Help
Additional help for seniors may vary from state to state. Some states offer reduced utility rates or help with electricity and gas bills. Reduced recreational fees and discounts help many seniors who have low income. For example, a National Parks pass for seniors is only $10 for lifetime entry, while the yearly pass for non-seniors is $80.
