The power steering pump on a Ford vehicle works in conjunction with the power steering gear, to aid the driver in steering. On a Ford light truck or car, it is pressed onto the power steering pump shaft. It is held on by friction, meaning no bolts or retaining clips hold the pulley onto the shaft. To remove the pulley from the power steering pump, a special power steering pump pulley puller is required.
Instructions
Removing a Ford Power Steering Pump Pulley
1. Remove the power steering belt. Loosen the tensioning bolt and push the power steering pump toward the engine. Then remove the belt.
2. Place the power steering puller shaft against the shaft on the power steering pump that runs through the center of the pulley.
3. Place the two pieces of the split collar around the puller shaft so that the bottom lip on each collar engages the lip in the center of the pulley.
4. Place the steel retaining ring around the two pieces of the split collar.
5. Turn the nut on the puller shaft clockwise until it contacts the top of the two pieces of the split collar.
6. Hold the nut on the puller shaft with a wrench.
7. Attach a socket and ratchet to the bolt head on the end of the puller shaft. Turn the ratchet clockwise to draw the pulley off the power steering pump shaft.
Reinstalling a Power Steering Pump Pulley
8. Place the power steering pump pulley squarely on the power steering pump shaft.
9. Thread the pulley installer into the pump shaft until it bottoms out.
10. Turn the nut on the installer shaft until it bottoms out against the pulley.
11. Hold the bolt head on the end of the installer with a wrench.
12. Turn the nut on the installer shaft clockwise until the pulley is installed on the pump shaft.
13. Unscrew the installer from the power steering pump shaft.
14. Place the power steering belt over the pulley.
15. Slide the power steering pump away from the engine and tighten the adjusting nut.
