Do Common Electrical Repairs

You can take care of your own minor electrical repairs by simply learning a few basic skills. Learning these common electrical skills can add up to savings for you, since you won't have to call an electrician for every little repair. Safety is the most important skill to learn and there are several ways you to safely prepare for common electrical repairs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with general safety rules before starting any electrical repairs. Wear rubber-soled shoes and never touch conductive surfaces.

2. Disconnect the power to the area you are working on or shut off power to the entire house. You must ensure that there is no electrical current flowing to your work site.

3. Understand the wiring to an electrical box. There are three to six total wires, one or two are hot, one or two are neutral and one or two are grounds. An electrical box with only three wires is located at the end of the house electrical line.

4. Realize that the hot wires, which are generally black, feed power to the source. Neutral wires are white and attach to the same area as the ground, which is green. These colors are important and prevent wiring problems in your home.
