Tethering a gas cap prevents it from being left behind.
If your original gas cap is being replaced with a locking one, it is a good idea to install a tether. Tethers help to prevent contaminants from being introduced into the fuel tank. This is because the gas cap no longer needs to be set down on surfaces that can transfer debris. Locking caps also help prevent gas theft, and they can keep vandals from tampering with the fuel. Installing a universal tether to a locking gas cap is easy to do, but a hole may have to be drilled to anchor the tether.
Instructions
1. Drill a small hole near the gas cap (when it is in place on the fill pipe). The hole needs to be the same size as the trim plugs included with the replacement tether kit. Check first to see if there is already an anchor hole for a tether in the body of the car before drilling.
2. Push the end of the tether with the larger retaining loop over the raised center of the locking gas cap. Tighten the loop around the cap, pulling the notched "belt" to close the loop or sliding the clip on the tether up snug to the cap to hold the retaining loop in position. Some tether kits will only have a rubber retaining loop that will need to be stretched over the cap. The loop will reform to the correct size when released.
3. Hold the end of the tether with the smaller retaining loop so that the loop is centered on the hole drilled near the gas cap. Push a trim retainer clip through the lip and into the body of the car.
