Many seniors live on fixed incomes. Home repairs can be expensive and, even when necessary, are often beyond the reach of low-income seniors. Federal, state and city governments offer grants to help seniors with home repair costs. Does this Spark an idea?
U.S. Department of Agriculture
The U.S. Department of Agriculture offers grants to seniors through the Rural Repair and Rehabilitation Loans and Grants program. To qualify, seniors must be age 62 or older and have an income that falls below 50 percent of the area median. Grants range up to $7,500 and can be used for repairs that remove safety hazards.
CHAI
Seniors over 62 in Baltimore can apply for home repair help through the nonprofit CHAI organization. Applicants must be on a fixed income and have physical disabilities to qualify. Grants can fund projects such as chimney and roof repairs, handyman chores and wheelchair ramp installation.
Community Action Planning Council
The Community Action Planning Council in Jefferson County, New York, operates the Restore Program. The program funds repairs to low-income seniors who own and occupy their own homes. Seniors must be at least 60 years old to apply. Qualified repairs include health and safety hazards, such as roof, furnace or structural repairs, electrical wiring, and stair installation.
