Adjust Downforce On A Craftsman Garage Door Opener

The amount of downward force applied by your Craftsman garage opener is controlled by a dial on the unit's motor head. You might need to make an adjustment if the door reverses before it reaches the closed position or if the door fails to reverse after touching an object; both are signs of incorrect force settings. The force settings are usually configured during installation, but you may need to make occasional adjustments if problems begin to appear. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place a stepladder beneath the opener's motor head. The force adjustment dials are located on the right side of the unit; icons beneath the dials indicate which one corresponds to upward and downward force.

2. Turn the dial marked with a downward arrow icon containing the letters "KG" clockwise with a screwdriver to increase pressure or anticlockwise to reduce. The pointed shape of the dial makes it easier to see how you are adjusting the pressure.

3. Test the door with increased or reduced force. You should increase the amount of force if the door reverses during closing or reduce it if the door moves with too much force. Move by increments of one until you find the right setting.
