If your house has a hole in the roof, it is paramount that you attend to it immediately. Unless the hole is patched, rainwater can seep into the roof and damage the insulation and interior ceiling. A hole is also an entryway for bugs and small rodents, each of which will nest in the roof. You don't need to be a master roofer or have extensive contracting experience to fix a hole in your roof, but you will need some specific tools and materials. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Place a ladder against your house.
2. Put gloves, a claw hammer, felt, a utility knife, a mop, roofing nails and shingles in a bucket. Tie one rope to the bucket and tie another rope to a bucket of tar.
3. Climb the ladder, holding the free ends of both ropes. Pull up both buckets once you're on the roof and put on the gloves. Empty the bucket of materials.
4. Pull up the old damaged shingle where the hole is located, using a claw hammer. Pull out any old nails as well and toss them in the empty bucket. Next, pull up the old felt, using a utility knife to cut into it and around the hole.
5. Cover the hole by pouring tar over it, and put a section of new felt down over the hole. Nail the felt to the roof with the hammer, then pour tar over the felt. If the tar is too thick to pour, use the mop.
6. Nail new shingles over the felt/tar patch, using a hammer and roofing nails. The small hole in your roof is now sufficiently patched.
7. Put the materials back in the empty bucket and lower it to the ground, then lower the tar bucket to the ground.
