Repair The Serpentine Belt On The 1993 Ford 3 0

Any 1993 Ford equipped with a 3.0 liter V-6 engine has a serpentine belt system to drive the various engine accessories. Over time, the rubber in the belt loses its internal moisture and begins to dry out. When this happens, you can expect to see the belt begin cracking, fraying and losing ribs. Once that stage begins, your next step should be replacing the belt. Consider proactive action to prevent an unscheduled stop on the side of the road when the belt breaks. If you have a little auto-repair skill you can do this job yourself.

Instructions

1. Lift the hood and support it with the prop rod. Familiarize yourself with the belt routing diagram, located on the fan shroud or the underside of the hood. The diagram shows the proper belt routing, as well as the locations of the belt tensioner, idler and various accessory pulleys.

2. Pull the tensioner pulley off the belt with the serpentine belt tool. Don't move the tensioner more than 1 inch or you can damage the tensioner spring. Slip the belt off the tensioner pulley with your free hand.

3. Move the tensioner back into place slowly and then remove the tool. Slip the belt off the remaining pulleys by hand and pull it out of the engine well. Depending on the model you're working on, you may need to access some of the pulley from underneath or through the right-front wheel well.

4. Compare the length of the new and old belts. The new belt should be no more than 1 inch shorter than the old belt. The variance is due to the stretching that takes place over the service life of the belt.

5. Wrap the new belt around the bottom of the crankshaft pulley. Follow the routing diagram to route the belt around each successive pulley until only the tensioner pulley remains.

6. Move the tensioner aside once more with the serpentine belt tool. Slip the belt over the tensioner pulley and hold it there while slowly moving the tensioner back into place. Remove the tool and close the hood.
