Do It Yourself Windows For Mobile Homes

Mobile homes often need window replacement.

Installing new windows in a mobile home or repairing the ones already in place requires special skills. It is a DIY project for anyone with experience working on mobile homes, and it will provide you the option of installing the windows you want in your home. More energy efficient windows will help save money and improve the look of the exterior. Does this Spark an idea?

New Windows

When installing new windows in a mobile home, the first step is to measure the existing windows. This involves taking a measurement from jamb to jamb (the sides of the windows). Remove or open the windows and measure the distance from one of the inner tracks to the next. Then measure from the bottom of the sill to the top of the sill. These measurements must be exact in order to properly size your new windows.

Once the windows are measured, new custom windows may be built and installed. The other option is to purchase newer windows from your mobile home manufacturer if they offer this service. Upgrading to more energy efficient windows may reduce heating and cooling costs.

Installation

Ensure that all parts and hardware have been delivered to your home. Double-check the parts against the manufacturer's shipping invoice. The window itself, latches, stops and side locks must be included. If not, contact the manufacturer and request the missing parts. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing your mobile home windows.

For double hung windows, the top sash is placed into the track first inside the jamb and slid into place. Slide the bottom sash into the outside track and then push it into place. Check the windows by sliding each sash open and locking them securely. Ensure they slide freely and without resistance.

Pre-Hung Windows

The other option is to install a pre-hung window. If you are installing a brand new window into a solid wall of your mobile home, this is the best option. First, cut an opening in the mobile home using a power saw, jig saw or circular saw. The rough opening must be cut to the precise dimensions of the pre-hung window.

The pre-hung window includes both the sashes, sill and frame in one piece, so the entire unit will be installed into your opening. The sill and frame must not be thicker than the walls in your mobile home. Not all pre-hung mobile home windows are designed to fit standard sized mobile home walls, so double-check the thickness before you order.

Installing Pre-Hung Windows

Once the window space is cut, seal the area using moisture seal strips. Tack them to the inside of the hole and then fold the edges over and staple them to the wall just beyond the edge. Install shims into the base of the window opening and level the opening with a carpenter's level. Then install the window in the opening. Next, nail the window trim around the newly installed window using 2-inch nails and a hammer to complete the install.
