Measure For A Window Replacement

Before you can replace your windows with newer, more energy-efficient ones, you need to figure out what size window you need. You can do this by measuring the opening where the new window will be installed. The process of measuring for a new window is not complicated, but you need to measure as precisely as possible to ensure that you get the best fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the window by stretching your measuring tape, in a straight line, across the opening, from one jamb to the other. Take three measurements -- at the top, the middle and the bottom of the opening -- and use the smallest number if there is a discrepancy.

2. Figure the height of the window by measuring from the highest point of the window sill to the top of the window. Take three measurements, from the left, the right and the center. Use the smallest measurement if there is a discrepancy.

3. Add 1/4 inch to each measurement. Write the measurements down, with the width first, then the height.
