Measure A Window For An Aluminum Screen Replacement

Aluminum screens allow you to open your windows and let those breezes blow through while still keeping bugs and other crawlies out of your home. Aluminum is a lightweight and easy-to-cut metal, which makes it perfect for window screens. If you need to measure a window for an aluminum screen replacement, the best time to do it is in the early spring. That way, you'll have your new aluminum window screens ready to let that summer air through. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the old window screen if it is currently in the frame. Go to the interior face of the screen. Lift up on the tabs or handles on the bottom of the screen and push away from you. Slide the screen down out of the window frame.

2. Clean off the window sill and surrounding area. Use a nylon brush to remove any bits of twigs, dust or caked-on mud.

3. Measure the window frame along the horizontal window sill. Make sure that you have the measuring tape stretched to the end of the sill in the gutter where the screen will sit; otherwise, your measurements will be off. Some houses will not have dedicated gutters or insets for the screens, so just measure from one side of the window frame to the other. Write this measurement down.

4. Measure the window frame from top to bottom as you did from side to side. Write this measurement down.

5. Subtract 1/4 inch from both the height and width measurements. These are the dimensions to which you should cut the sides for your aluminum screen replacement. Subtracting the 1/4 inch gives you room to manipulate the screen into the window frame and give it some "wiggle room."
