Sears Craftsman Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting

Save money on repairs by troubleshooting your Sears Craftsman garage door opener first.

Sears Craftsman automatic garage door openers rely on several moving parts to raise and lower the door on command. This means that there are a lot of pieces that can fail and prevent your door from opening properly. Fortunately, most of them are inexpensive and easy to fix. Make sure you use only Sears Craftsman-compatible parts if you do find any defective items that must be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Try to operate the garage door from the opener mounted on the wall instead of using the remote control. If it works, the batteries in your remote probably need to be replaced.

2. Close the garage door and turn off the circuit breaker switch that controls the power to the opener.

3. Look for loose bolts or screws in and around the garage door track. Tighten them as needed and replace any missing parts you find. Use a stiff scrub brush to clean off the track and rollers.

4. Apply a light coating of motor oil to lubricate the track. Do not lubricate the track with grease. Debris will get stuck in the grease and clog up the track faster.

5. Test the springs by disconnecting the garage door opener and opening the door by hand. If you feel a lot of resistance, the springs may not have enough tension for the automatic door opener to lift the door. You may be able to adjust the tension instead of replacing the entire spring if the spring has not been stretched out too far.

6. Change the travel limit if your garage door is closing part of the way and then bouncing back up. The two adjustment screws are located on the left panel of the motor unit.

7. Note the type of noises the door opener makes when it is running. If you hear scraping or grinding, the gears or motor may need repair. At this point, you should consult a professional serviceman who can open up the motor and diagnose the problem.

8. Make sure the optical sensors at the bottom of the door opening are lined up. Even a slight misalignment can shut down the system.
