1. Inspect the bad place in the flooring. You will want to assess the size of the problem area so you will know how much flooring you're going to have to rip up. If you cannot match up the flooring that is already down, you should go ahead and tear the old flooring up entirely and recover the floor.
2. Remove the flooring around the bad area. You will want to tear enough out to determine how much plywood you're going to cut.
3. Cut the bad wood out with a skill saw and cut it out to the floor joist. You will want to cover that bad area with a new piece of plywood. The plywood will need to be measured and cut to fit precisely on both floor joists.
4. Measure the new hole from where the flooring stops and determine the distance to where it picks up again. Measure then from joist to joist.
5. Cut your plywood to the measurements. The piece should fit snugly into the area you previously cut out.
6. Nail the piece of plywood to the floor joists. This should provide you with a good and sturdy floor where the bad area was.
