Repair A Rusty Truck Frame

Rust is formed when moisture touches metal.

Removing rust from a truck does not require paying expensive auto body shop fees. The entire process of removing the rust from the truck frame and restoring the paint to its original glory can actually be completed without special training. There are also ways of preventing further rust from forming once the restoration is complete. Washing the truck on a regular basis can remove the elements that create rust, and immediately filling in chips in the paint on the truck frame will prevent rust-causing moisture from reaching the metal surface below.

Instructions

1. Cover the surface of the truck that does not have any rust. This will prevent any rust particles from landing on clean surfaces, which can cause rust to grow there. Tape newspaper in place around the area where rust is found.

2. Grind the surface of the frame with a metal grinder, in slow circular motions. Moving too fast will cause chunks of metal to be removed from the frame. Remove all paint, and rust.

3. Sand the frame with an electric sander, and 120-grit sand paper.

4. Apply two coats of rust converter. This will convert any rust particles remaining on the frame into a paint-able surface. It also prevents them from growing. Wait 20 minutes in between each coat before applying a second.

5. Apply two coats of paint to the surface of the truck frame. Wait for each coat to completely dry before continuing.

6. Apply two coats of clear coat paint to the surface of the truck frame. Wait for each coat to dry.

7. Remove the newspaper coverings from the vehicle. Wash and wax the truck.
